Caring for Your Carpet

As we walk on our carpets they become worn and dirty over time.  Caring for your carpet is important because without proper care carpets will look dirty and worn out.  In fact, inadequate carpet care usually results in having to throw the carpet out because the fibers lose their shape and the accumulated dirt just makes them look gross.

Basic Carpet Care

The most important step in caring for and maintaining your carpet is to vacuum them on a frequent basis.  Because dirt becomes trapped down into the carpet fibers it is important to vacuum your carpets thoroughly.  When the dirt is trapped in the carpet fibers overtime it will cause the carpet to lose it's shape.  Furthermore, the dirt will also become more unpleasant as oil residues in the air stick to it and make it stick to the fibers even more so.  By vacuuming on a regular basis you can reduce the amount of dirt that gets trapped in the carpet fibers.  Vacuuming low traffic area carpet at least once per week is recommended.  Carpet that is more prone to high traffic should be vacuumed at least a few times a week.  Also, don't forget to vacuum under area rugs to ensure that dirt is removed.

As you enter your home and office everyday, dirt is carried inside with you.  So a good idea to reduce the amount of dirt being carried inside is to use mats at each entrance.  An indoor and outdoor mat is recommended to reduce the amount of dirt tracked inside.

No matter how careful we are sometimes we cannot control accidental spills such as wine and Kool-Aid.  To prevent stains from taking over your carpet it is recommended to apply a carpet protector such as Teflon®.  There are stain-resistant carpets, however, the stain-resistance of these carpets wears out over time.  It's recommended that you apply a carpet protector after each carpet cleaning.

Carpet Care for Removing Stains

If you do spill something on your carpet it is important that you act promptly to clean it up.  The longer you wait the harder it is going to be to get the stain out.

Also, if you spill something that is clear or the same color as the carpet don't think that it will be invisible.  Many times these clear liquids change colors as time passes.

So, the first step is to spot clean by using a white paper towels or tissues to absorb the liquid.  It is important that you do not add any liquids during this spot cleaning because they will make the stain spread and also cause it to go deeper into the carpet.

If you have a special cleaning solution that you want to use it's best to test it first by using on a small amount.  Put a few drops of the cleaning solution on the stain and then place a white paper towel on top for about 10 to 15 seconds.  If you notice that the carpet dyes have rubbed onto your paper towel then you should call Space Coast Cleaning Inc. to professionally clean the carpet and remove the stain.

If you follow these basic carpet care tips, which includes vacuuming your carpet regularly and spot cleaning your carpet as needed then there's no doubt your carpet will last longer and look better. In addition to these basic carpet care tips you should also have your carpet professionally cleaned at least once per year or every 18 months.
